AVALENE DRAKE SWANSON: IMPROVING LIFE AT HOME AND ABROAD

Avalene Drake Swanson ’61, New Richmond, retired in 1999 from Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College where she taught home economics-related adult and continuing education classes and served as continuing education supervisor. She also taught high school home economics and coordinated and escorted daylong and extended tours for New Richmond Community Education.

In retirement she keeps busy traveling and learning about other cultures. She has participated in three Wisconsin and Nicaragua Learning Center Tours with the Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partnership, which arranges people-to-people activities and support to improve lives and communities in Wisconsin and Nicaragua.

With Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, she has participated in people-to-people tours to Brazil and Malawi, Africa. Helping at home, she records local news for the visually impaired.

Swanson attributes much of her enjoyment of travel and working with and for others from her days at UW-Stout. Her exposure to different teaching styles, students from around the nation and the world, also broadened her perspective.
