DIETECTICS ALUMNA DIRECTING NATIONAL FOOD SERVICE INSTITUTE

Katie Schuld Wilson B.S. ’81, M.S. ’84 has come a long way since 1980, when she developed and implemented a menu for children at the UW-Stout Day Care Center. At that time, she was an undergrad pursuing a degree in dietetics.
 
Three degrees — Wilson received her Ph.D. in 2007 — and more than 30 years later, she remains active in dietetics, especially in child nutrition. Wilson is executive director of the National Food Service Management Institute and an associate professor in the School of Applied Science at the University of Mississippi, affectionately known as Ole Miss.
 
In her leadership role, she is responsible for overseeing all U.S. Department of Agriculture cooperative agreements and grant activities in compliance with university policies and procedures, as well as supervising hiring and coordination of training consultants in seven USDA regions. Her responsibilities include redeveloping the institute to its intention at the national level.
 
In a visit to UW-Stout in March, Wilson shared her principles of leadership. Her leadership philosophy revolves around positive interactions with people, effective communication, flexibility — “Don’t cling to familiar turf and job descriptions” — competence, engagement, synergy and recognizing that leadership is a continuous journey.
