Faculty/Staff

Earl W. Gierke, 84, Menomonie, associate vice chancellor emeritus and professor emeritus, died Saturday, Sept. 16 at his home. After serving in World War II, Gierke completed his education and was an engineer for an industrial manufacturer of boilers and heavy machinery in Minneapolis for six years. He taught mathematics at Dunwoody Institute and the University of Minnesota, and joined the faculty of Stout State College in 1962. He served seven years as chair of the mathematics department, and was instrumental in the development and launch of the applied mathematics program. He retired in 1987 as the university’s associate vice chancellor.

Bette Ann Hanson, 78, New Berlin, professor emeritus from the human development, family living and community educational services department, died Monday, Sept. 25, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital. At UW-Stout, she was program director and professor of early childhood education. She retired in 1996.

Marcia Metcalf, 82, Mesa, Ariz., professor emeritus of apparel, textiles and design in the School of Home Economics (now the College of Human Development), died June 9. In 1971, she helped plan The Niche, a retail store laboratory that allows students to obtain hands-on experience in retail operations. She retired in 1986.

James Runnalls, 79, professor emeritus, died Thursday, July 20 at his home in Sagle, Idaho. He taught industrial education for 27 years before retiring in 1990.

Douglas Stallsmith, 72, Menomonie, professor emeritus, died, Aug. 6 at the Dunn County Health Care Center. He served in the U.S. Air Force for three years. In 1966 he moved to Menomonie, where he was a part of the American Industry Project at Stout. He also taught in the industrial management department, retiring in 1995. While at Stout, he and his wife, Nancy, hosted more than 90 international students from all over the world. He also taught in Japan for six weeks. He served as cross country coach for several years.

Helen Weekes, 85, Houston, former associate professor in the education department at Stout during the 1970s, died April 1.
